Gumball was almost completely hidden behind the tall stacks of books on the table. It was only the first week of class, but there was a test coming up in one of his classes and he wanted to be completely prepared.
He could probably head back to the common room to study, he supposed, but then what if he ended up needing a book he had left behind? It wasn't as though he could carry all of these, not unless he used some kind of weightless charm... He was already running through lists of spells in his mind before he remembered that he wasn't really supposed to use magic in the hallways.
Well, that settled it then. He was just going to have to stay here until he was done studying, however late that may be.

Why were these shelves so darn tall?
The young girl jumped again, trying to reach for an old book perched at the top of the shelf. She looked around quickly, making sure no one had seen her pathetic excuse of problem solving. All the other students were using charms and spells to make the books slowly float down.
What's the spell for that...?
Charlotte groaned inwardly... And maybe outwardly as well. It was only her first week here, yet she was swamped! And it's not like she could remember that dumb spell anyway! She was certain they had taught it in class... Maybe when she was day dreaming or something... Charlotte shook her head, dispelling the thought. They just haven't taught us that spell yet. She nodded, convincing herself.

Ah, he was justified! The book he was currently reading kept referencing another by the same author, and it was nowhere in the stack on the table. He knew there was a reason he hadn't headed back to the common room. He got to his feet and made his way between the various students that were doing their homework (and many that were not). When he reached the shelf, however, he found a small girl standing directly in front of the book he needed. He noted her pink hair with interest-- something they had in common?-- and cleared his throat, before saying quietly, "Excuse me."

Charlotte jumped, turning to the intrusion of her own personal world.
"Oh, uh.. Hi?" She managed to squeak out.
Calm down, Charlotte. He has pink hair. That must mean he's a good person!
She stood there, fidgeting. Why was he here? Did he need something? Was he here to help?? If he was, did that mean-- Gasp! Was he a prince in shining... Or... Not so shining armor??

He was about to ask for the book behind her, but her expression seemed nervous and upset, and he couldn't just ignore that. "Do you need help with something?" he asked, voice quiet, ducking his head slightly so that she could hear him better.

"Uh..."
Charlotte squeaked, ducking her head to hide her embarrassment [which really was counterproductive since her wonderful pink prince had leaned down to hear her]. Her prince charming was so nice!
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them,"
Charlotte mumbled, gesturing towards the top of the bookshelf, not daring to meet Gumball's eyes. Maybe he could reach the book? He was taller... And definitely older, so maybe he knew that charm or, or, or whatever that spell was to make the books float!

"Hm? But that's not that...oh." Well, she was pretty short. He reached up and took the book from a high shelf, holding it out to her. "Here you are. Don't you have your own copy?" Maybe times had changed since his first year, but he thought it had been mandatory back then.

Charlotte snatched the book away, shifting her weight from foot to foot.
"Well, one of those "Fantastic Beasts" got to it and I um... I need to borrow one until I found a new one... And don't worry! I'll get a new copy!"
She didn't want to disappoint her prince! What if he thought she was stupid? Or lazy? No, no, no, no, no! That wouldn't do!
"I just wanted to get ahead in the class while I can!"
There! That will do.

He smiled at that last bit, amused. "A shame you aren't in Ravenclaw; we could have used someone as dedicated to their studies as you." That gave him a bit of an idea. "Would you like to borrow my copy? I'm not in that class anymore, so I have no need of it." As a prefect, he was supposed to help all students, whether they were in his house or not.

Charlotte flushed bright red, quickly turning away from him.
"I guess so... If that's okay!"
Charlotte rested the tip of the book against her forehead, hiding her face. So he was in Ravenclaw...
I guess that makes sense... I mean, he's wearing blue and silver, isn't he?
Charlotte peaked out from underneath the book, confirming her thoughts as she spotted his tie, also taking the time to actually look, okay, so maybe she was staring, at him. He was tall... Well, not tall tall, but tall...er. Maybe he was a fourth or fifth year? Maybe? Her eyes moved up to his hair. Pink. Light pink. Charlotte twirled a piece of her own pink hair. Hers was a more... bright pink. Was his natural? Maybe? Was magical involved?
Charlotte shook her head. Staring was rude. And she didn't want to be rude to her prince.

"It's perfectly alright." He took the book from her again, stealing her handy-dandy face shield, and slid it back into it's spot on the shelf. "It's back in my dormitory, though. Will you wait here while I fetch it?" It was at this point that he noticed her staring, but he didn't bringing it up for fear of embarrassing her further.

Charlotte jumped, nodding enthusiastically. She couldn't believe she was going to get her prince's book! Maybe there were special little notes in there? Or what about spells he made up? Or drawings? Was he good at drawing? Oh, he just seemed like the artistic type! What if he drew little cute things like little ponies? Or bunnies? Or dogs? Or... Unicorns?? What about twonicorns? Or even what about--
The girl shook her head.
What am I doing? He's just loaning me his book, he's being nice, that's all.
"I-I don't mind."

"Wonderful. I'll return shortly." He smiled quickly at her and then turned to go, walking at a brisk pace so he didn't keep her waiting long. The path from the library to the Ravenclaw common rooms was one he traveled often, so he knew all the best shortcuts. It shouldn't take him long.

Charlotte watched Gumball leave, offering an awkward half-wave.
Where should I go? I mean... I can stay right here! But... Would I be in the way? Well, maybe... Should I go sit down at a table or something? No, no, what if he can't find me?
Charlotte looked around nervously, wondering what to do.
Maybe I can find a book on anatomy... Or heads somewhere in here...
Charlotte took off in the opposite direction. Where would those books be? Was there any organization in the library? An idea popping into her head, Charlotte closed her eyes, thinking of books about heads.
"Left!" She turned left, wondering around the library.
Maybe I'm really psychic! If it's over here, that would be so amazing!
Charlotte puttered around the tall bookcases, hoping it could really be true, but the books offered no insight about heads... They were mostly just about Potions... Disappointed, Charlotte turned back to the bookcase Gumball left her at. It was right over this way! ... Or was it a right turn three shelves back?

When he returned with his copy tucked neatly under his arm, she was nowhere to be found. He considered calling out her name, before realizing that not only was he in the library, but they hadn't even introduced themselves. He peered down the row of books. Had she wandered off? Maybe he'd taken too long...
