"I just said that, didn't I?" Marshall had barely gotten this out of his mouth when Gumball continued on to say he needed to stay away from him. Now, it wasn't like he had just lost his favorite toy, his favorite person to annoy. No, it was more like... Fine. It was one of the only people he considered a "friend" [even if he used that term loosely], telling him to stay away. It shouldn't have mattered, but he really couldn't spend all of his time around Yellow and... Uh... Shion and... ... ... Other people.
"C'mon, Barnaby! I promise I won't say any of that stuff again!"

He was angry to the point of not caring when Marshall used his first name.
"It doesn't matter if you say it again! If everyone thinks we're...together," he managed, saying it as if it was a bad word, "then people are going to think things if they see you hanging around me all the time!"
He didn't want the other boy to leave him alone, not really. In the back of his mind he knew he could be too serious, and that he needed someone around who would make him enjoy himself-- but no, he scolded himself sternly, Shion could do that. Charlotte could do that. Marshall wasn't the only person in the world with that ability.

"Thats-- That's ridiculous!" Marshall jumped off the chair to stare Barnaby in the eyes [much more intimidating. Don't doubt it.] "They won't know, okay? I'll go back and tell Anri that it was a joke, okay?!"
This was pathetic. It wasn't like he was begging to be around him. It was just... What was he supposed to do about tests? Or homework? Or if he had a stupid question that he needed answered? There was no way he was going to ask a teacher [none of them seemed to like him for one reason or another... Odd] and... What if... But... No. He didn't need this and yet--
"C'mon, I promise I'll only talk to you! I won't touch you or anything! Dude, I'll stay at least two feet away at all times!"

He glared up at him for a moment, trying not to show he was considering it. Then, with a sigh, he looked down but didn't step back.
"Make sure she -- and everyone else! -- knows it's a joke. And no touching. Verstehen?"
It was the best deal he was going to get, and to tell the truth he didn't mind settling for that.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got it." Marshall grumbled. He'd just have to try more projectile pranks... Or something. But that was a thought for another day. Today was concerned with more important [not really] things. Like how ridiculous this whole thing was. Barnaby never had a problem with it before he made that stupid joke [ yes he did ], so why did it matter now??
"I still don't get why this is such a big deal."

Marshall was sort of right; he'd made similar jokes in the past years but Gumball had always just brushed it off. What was different this time? Was it that Anri had believed him, when other students always laughed at the crazy idea? Was it because they were older, and what had been silly childhood jesting was now something that could affect his future life and career? Or maybe the reason had something to do with that rush of doubt-- but he shut that thought down fast, as he realized Marshall was probably still waiting for an answer. He stammered and said the first thing he could think of. "Y-you...You ruined any chance I might have had with Shion." There, that would do.

Was he serious? Really? Was that it? All for a girl. Ridiculous.
"Dude, she knew it was a joke; she was one of the first one's laughing." He rolled his eyes. A couple years ago, Barnaby would never be this bothered by not getting a girl. He had never shown any interest in dating anyone before, why was he so interested in Shion now? There had to be something about her... Sure, she was pretty enough and nice enough, but that terrifying moment that... Marshall shook his head, banishing the thought. He didn't want to think about it. Like... At all. He smirked, returning to his normal self. "She's outta your league anyway."

"You only say that because she's so far out of your league that you aren't close enough to judge."
He breathed an internal sigh of relief. They were back to normal. Bickering with Marshall was something comforting and normal. Maybe what had happened wasn't such a big deal after all.

"Don't worry dude, I'll totally help you land the chick... Maybe." He snickered, about to ruffle Gumball's hair, like he would to a little kid, only to have his hand recoil, as if he touched something white hot.
"Right. No touching. I got this!" Was he really going to have to go through this every single time they were together? This could get really bothersome really fast. To keep his hands occupied, out of the way [not that he would forget, it's just... ... ... he would forget.], Marshall crossed them across his chest, nodding towards Gumball's bag with a grin.
"Anymore food? Cause, by lookin' at the time, it seems you owe me lunch."

"Hm, I won't need your help, but thanks." He didn't lean away as Marshall reached towards him. In fact, it wasn't until the black-haired boy jerked back that he remembered the no touching rule.
The truth was that he wasn't interested in Shion. At least, not like that. Oh, he might be, if they spend more time together and got to know each other better. As it was, she was just a convenient excuse to get Marshall off his back and off his mind.
He snatched his bag off the desk, holding it protectively. "I do not have any more food for you. But we're done here. You can go eat now."

"If you ever wanted to get to date Shion, or anyone for that matter, you'd need my help. You're kinda hopeless. I mean like... Not a lot hopeless, just a littlhrm.... okay, maybe a lot hopeless, but that's why you'd get ~my~ help," Marshall smiled, slouching back before turning uncharacteristically serious.
"But! To get my help, I want lunch. Really, I'm hungry." As if to reinstate this thought, his stomach took the time to growl loudly. Marshall shot a quick glance down, as if to quiet it [which it actually did stop making noise. I guess it's just a skill that only amazing people have~], then quickly looked back up to make sure his lunch ticket didn't escape.

"I don't need your help to find a date, Marshall." He wasn't even really looking for a date at that moment. Homework and prefect duties were far more important, and didn't leave time for much else.
"If you're that hungry, go ahead. I consider this matter settled." As if to prove it, he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked to the door, turning to wait for him. "Coming?"

Marshall stood there, dumbfounded. He was so angry a couple of minutes ago and now he considered this "settled"? Not normal. His stomach let out another growl, snapping him out of his trance. "Course I am!" He picked up his own bag-- wait. What bag. Crap! Where did he put his bag? No wait... In the commonroom... He should probably go pick that up... Eventually... Maybe... Before classes? No wait... No classes on weekends. Well, whatever. Sometime in the near [or not so near] future!
"So you think they'll have strawberries?" Marshall trotted after Barnaby, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Nooooooooooot that I care or anything, strawberries are just kinda, you know, good." Whew! His secret obsession with the little delicious red fruits was safe again. Close call, but there's no way someone like Gumball would be able to figure that out.

He glanced over his shoulder at Marshall, amused by the hasty cover-up. "I don't know. Those seem to be more of a breakfast-type thing, and you've missed that by several hours." He made his way around the corner to the great hall.

"Think they'll be any leftovers?" Marshall scowled at the thought of every other student consuming all of the strawberries. What IF there weren't any left?? He quickened his pace [because he was hungry, not because he was worried about the strawberries, okay?], grabbing Gumballs wrist as to not leave behind in his dust [oh yeah. He was going that fast. The next people wouldn't be able to SEE in that hallway cause there was so much dust in the air.].
"Come on! I don't think you can even walk any slower!" Usually he wouldn't be this impatient, even with food, but this was different. Strawberries were on the line. And strawberries. Were important.
