Cabal kept his classroom in perfect working order. It was practical, yet he'd made an effort to decorate with the numerous items he'd collected in his travels, some more frightening than others. It was offset by the natural light that came in through the windows. He had no problem with scaring the children, but he also selected an environment that would be most comfortable for him for the next nine months.
He straightened his coat nd stood at the front of the class, waiting for the first years.

Alfred shyly peeked into the classroom, his eyes wide as saucers as he stared at the decorations. His spastic eleven year old mind eagerly made his eyes leap from object to object in blunt childlike wonder. Some of the objects sent chills up his spine but he put on a bold face. However, he hesitated going in, not wanting to go alone or at least without some poor Hufflepuff to use as a meat shield...you know, in case one of the objects came to life and wanted a first year sandwich...or worse...a ghost came out.
Alfred gulped. Now that he thought about it, MANY of these objects looked like they have a curse or two with a bit of haunting spirits as a side dish to the horror cusine....dammit, he was hungry again...and terrified.

Cabal saw one of the first years lurking outside his door. "You might as well come in. Nothing here bites." He picked up a jar containing a faery preserved in formaldehyde and placed it on one of the high shelves.

Charlotte stepped into the room and stopped immediately. Everything in the room was just so... different from her nice, although, muggle home in Germany. Is this even the right place...? Wondered the young first year as she checked her schedule numerous times, looking up every few seconds to stare around the classroom again. Shying away from the room and the professor, Charlotte inched behind the other presumably first year, judging by the terrified look in his eyes, and nixed talking. The Gryffindor could do all the talking.

Alfred squeaked at being spoken to and quickly skittered inside, taking his seat.
"I-I'm sorry!" He stammered out. His caretaker always did tell him it was rude to lurk in doorways yet here he was doing it anyways.

Cabal gave the boy a stare that he hoped wasn't too intimidating. He fingered his class roster, staring at the girl remaining outside. "The first five students to class get chocolate frogs," he announced with toned-down severity.
He neither understood children nor had any sort of fondness for psychology, but he knew that candy was usually a good motivator. Someday he planned to clicker-train first years.

"Chocolate!?" Alfred immediately forgot being scared or guilty about being rude. After all, candy from strangers was awesome! "Thank you very much, Professor!" At least in his excitement he remembered to say thank you. Alfred happily fidgeted in his spot as he waited for his chocolate frog.
"Wait...did you say FROG?"

"Be careful that it doesn't hop away from you. There are some things in this office I'd rather it not accidentally set free." Cabal tossed the pentagonal box to the child.

Yellow timidly followed Charlotte into the room, a bit nervous as she didn't particularly like the idea of learning magic to hurt other people. She stayed close to Alfred, who she knew from the train. He was talking to the professor, and therefore he must not be afraid of him, or this class. So that must mean that if she stayed near him she wouldn't be so afraid.

Mac walked into his first Defense Against the Dark Arts class, ready to learn new spells...and whatever else one learned from this class. The natural light gave off a rather comfortable and homely feel, and he felt the first-time nerves settle down as he picked a seat in the front row and placed his bag by the chair. He had made it a mission to get to class early so that he could get a front seat; it wasn't easy to learn when someone a good foot taller than you sat directly in front, blocking the board. He noticed the teacher standing at the front of the class, tossing something to a Gryffindor boy. Two Hufflepuff girls were also in the classroom, sitting at desks but being quiet. Mac placed his books and parchment on the desk, as well as his quill and ink well; and, figuring he had enough time, began to sketch on a scrap piece of paper.

Charlotte leaned forward, trying to get a better look at the new boy that just walked into the class. The first Ravenclaw...
I wonder if he's nice... Ravenclaws are supposed to be cold...
Charlotte wondered, mouthing the words, yet not letting a sound escape them. She stared at him, wondering he he had any cheese... Or sweets for that matter!
The Hufflepuff leaned forward, propping her elbows up on her desk in front of her, staring at the Ravenclaw. He had such a lovely head... Kinda roundish with a mop of brown hair on top... His neck was pretty skinny, but she could deal with that... What was his name again? Pat? Matt? Mac? Wasn't that it? Like... Mac! Mac and cheese! That must mean the young boy had to have cheese on him somewhere, right??
Charlotte quickly picked up her bags, moving across the room to plop down next to him, staring straight ahead at the board. Okay... So I planned this far... ... ... Now what?

Jim made it to his Defense Against the Dark Arts class with some time to spare and looked over the class for a bit. He saw a brown-haired boy at a desk sketching. "He can’t be very annoying…" He thought to himself. "If I’m lucky he might just continue doodling.” He sat down in the desk to the left of the boy and pulled out a Rubix cube that he had brought from home to pass time before class started.

To say Mac was startled when two other first years sat next to him was an understatement. When your older brother was a big bully, not many kids in school wanted to seek you out and become friends. Finishing off the body of the sketch in front of him, he took the time to study them out of the corners of his eyes. The girl on his right had amazingly pink hair, and the tie around her neck indicated she was a Hufflepuff. The way she had been staring at him earlier gave him the feeling she wanted something. He turned his attention to the boy on the left, who had on a Gryffindor colored tie, and who seemed to want to be left alone judging by the way he was absorbed in his Rubix cube. He turned his attention back to his drawing, finished off the head and arms, then decided he should probably be polite and say something. "Um...hi?" Yeah, that was perfect, Mac, perfectly eloquent, he groaned in his head.

Charlotte stared over the boys shoulder, watching him draw, memorized by the way his lines all seem to connect and flow together to create, well, artwork. The people he drew looked like they could just jump off the paper! Well... You know, cartoon-ish people, huh? And how cool would that be?! Little cartoon people jumping around the room, off the walls, you could even take them along with you! But where would you keep the--
"Um... hi?"
The two words jolted Charlotte out of her wild daydream.
"Oh, uh, hi!" She didn't even realize she was standing up, peering over his shoulder until she sat back down in her seat with a 'flumph' Suddenly, everything came back, lightning fast, and she realized she was in an odd room full of strangers. "I'm Charlotte," she said, much more quietly, opting not to stick her hand out for Mac to shake.

Jim heard a small sound coming from the boy on his right so he turned to face him. Jim was too distracted to pay attention to what the boy was saying, but Jim assumed that he had asked a question based on his tone. He wasn’t quite sure who the question was directed to, so he acknowledged him with a distant response. “What?”
