Fenris sat at the edge of the lake, staring into its depth. Supposedly, a giant squid lived in it. He pondered if it was a magical squid, such as one that could speak, or if it was just a plain, run-of-the-mill squid that someone had dumped in the lake as a baby. Did it have friends? Did it interact with the other fishy creatures in the water, or was it lonely? Such thoughts were a regular occurrence, as Fenris sat on the edge of the water, his arms wrapped around his legs and his bangs disguising all emotion.

Amitola dashed out of the building, as fast as she could. Enthralled by the wind in her hair, and the incredible view, she barely noticed the man sitting by the edge of the lake. In fact, it didn't occur to her that he was sitting there until she collided with him at full speed, quite possibly with enough force to knock him into the lake if he weren't steady.

Fenris tumbled forward, and would have been completely in the lake if he hadn't dug his wrists into the ground at the last second to stop his motion. The unfortunate, well, unfortunate for the person who had run into him, instance was that it sent that person flying into the water, as if Fenris' body was a ramp. Fenris stood, and watched the person hit the water. They were only a tad bit wet. And it served the person right for running into someone who was simply minding his own business. "You have some nerve..." He began, glaring at the shape in the water.

Amitola shrieked as she went flying into the water. For a moment, she wasn't sure how to get herself out of this situation - She had never learned to swim. Fortunately, her instincts kicked in enough to get her sputtering to the surface. However, they were not enough to keep her there for very long. She bobbed up and down in the water, sputtering and splashing around -- very much like someone who didn't know how to swim.

Fenris sighed. "Of course. Those who are rude and get what's coming to them generally need a helping hand..." Fenris walked a little ways away, judging where the shore ended and the deep water began. Taking a deep breath, he swan dived in. Swimming for a span, he caught the person, which he know realized to be a girl, under the armpits, dragging her to the surface and throwing her rather unceremoniously onto the shore before climbing out on his own. His white hair now ran down his face in rivets, quite ruining the glare he was giving her as he stood over her sputtering form.

Amitola bolted up into a sitting position. She still hadn't quite gotten rid of the excess water in her lungs, so she coughed through her words. "Excuse me, mister! I don't know who you are, but I was perfectly fine in there! I would have gotten out just fine on my own!" She then pulled herself into a standing position, which only made the coughing worse. "Why'd you have to be sitting there, anyway?"

Fenris paused, looking at the strange girl in front of him as he thought. Obviously, she wasu not the type of person that would understand the direct approach. Naturally, of course, this is what he decided to go with. "You were drowning, in case you hadn't noticed. But obviously your time is better spent running into innocent bystanders. I was, for your information, simply thinking. From your attitude, these seems to be something that has escaped the realm of your cognition."

Amitola brushed past him, flicking her spiked (and bright green) hair. "Yeah, whatever. You were in my way." She started to take off back towards the Gryffindor common room, but hesitated. Without turning around, she offered, "But, I didn't mean to run into you. Sorry if you got hurt."

Fenris blinked at the sudden kindness. What that... compassion? He cleared his throat awkwardly. Women... Did not normally show him compassion. Or passion at all, for that matter. Was there a such thing as un-passion? If so, most gave him this. This moment, however personal, did not excuse the fact that she had almost pushed him into the lake. As he mustered up the courage to confront her, he felt his confidence die in his chest. "Do you think the giant squid can talk?" He yelled. What was that? A fluster? Fenris did not fluster. Still, the sentence was out and he mentally stabbed himself in the eye for not carefully choosing his words. He would not let this girl... This GRYFFINDOR... Get the best of him.

Amitola froze for a moment, before spinning rather quickly on her heel. She gave him a rather confused stare as she simply asked "What?"

Fenris figured that the proverbial cat was out of her proverbial bag, he might as well continue with the topic. "The squid. In the lake. Do you think it can talk? I was... wondering if..." Fenris felt himself get slightly trance-like as he stared at the lake. "It was lonely. I mean, it may be the only one of its kind down there and... It might... You know, what a friend...."

Amitola shrugged her shoulders, walking back to his side. Staring out over the water, she frowned. "I don't know. I never really thought about it. Is there even a squid down there?" She reached a foot out and kicked at some of the water lazily.

Fenris watched the rock float down gently. "If there was, I don't believe your puny attempt at rock-kicking would bother it. It has had first years shipped across its lake every year, you know."

Amitola folded her arms across her chest, refusing to admit that he made some logical sense. Instead, she spat back at him: "I know. I'm not stupid, you know. I've been across that boat!"

"As have I, and I figured you had. If you hadn't, I would have had to bring you down in the name of the safety of students." He looked at her. "How old are you, by the way? If I had to match your age to your maturity level, I would say two. But I'll give you the benefit of a few years... 11? A first year?"
