Edge threw his sweater on top of his things, relishing the feeling of coolness on his arms and chest. He tossed his quiill in the air, catching it in between his index and middle fingers. "So, Shion," he asked in English, "I don't think I've heard you speak about your life outside of the school. What's your family like?"

Shion watched him play with the quill, though, she had seen him do it before, and wasn't as impressed as the first time. His question made her tense, and she looked away from him, biting her lip. "My family..." She gripped at the table softly. "Is horrid."

Edge raised an eyebrow at Shion's sttatement. "Something you'd rather not talk about, I'm going to assume." He shrugged. "I won't press you on it. Everyone has a skeleton in their closet." 'or four...' he mentally added.

Shion shook her head, sighing. "Well, my family isn't something that I'm ashamed of talking about. It's just certain things involving them that I am." She ran her fingers through her hair. "What about you, Edge-san?"

Edge grimaced. "Where do I start? My dad left me with my mom in Japan for seven years and showed up out of nowhere on my eighth birthday. My mom had to work prettymuch every day, so I mostly stayed with my grandpa, who was the one who taught me about ninjutsu." He paused. "And he made the best curry this side of the equator."

Shion listened to him carefully. She felt bad for him, not having a father for the first crucial years of life. Although, she smiled when he mentioned is grandfather. "I'm glad you had a good relationship with your grandfather..."

Edge smiled sadly. "Keyword had. He passed away from cancer about a year ago." He sighed as he looked out the window. "Old man never even gave me his recipe like he promised." He felt a small tear leak out of the corner of his eye, and he wiped it before Shion could see it. He couldn't show weakness, not in front of a lady.

"Oh, I'm very sorry..." She touched his back softly, looking over his shoulder, trying to see his face. "We could cook one day. Try to find his recipe using all different ingredients." She grinned at him, kidding of course.

Edge smiled slightly. "Trust me, I've tried. The old man had some sort of secret ingredient that he'd never tell me." He frowned. "All he left me was his problems and death threats from assorted people who hate my family."

Shion pulled a lock of hair from over her shoulder, and habitually began to twirl it around her finger. "Oh..." That's really all she could offer. What else could she say to such a thing?

Edge sighed as he patted Shion on the shoulder. "It's fine. He told me as much the last time we talked. Despite all the things that happened with my family, I'm still happy with my life." He grinned broadly. "Besides, sadness and anger just don't suit me that well."

"They don't." she smiled, "You look much better when you're happy, Edge-san." She looked out a window, towards the darkening sky. All this talk of a happy family did warm her spirit, even though she never really had such experiences. Her family was never so close, aside from Shion and her sister. But that didn't seem to last very long.

Edge smiled and lay his head on the table. "As do you, Shion." He laughed lightly. "I swear, you remind me so much of Rydia."

There was that name again. Shion's teal eyes looked back at her friend. "Tell me about her, Edge-san. Who was she?"

Edge's smile vanished. "She was my best friend before I left for Hogwarts. We'd known each other since I was a baby, and the instant I figured out that I was supposed to grow up and marry a girl, I wanted her to be my wife." He leaned back into his chair and sighed. "I chased her for years until the summer before my 6th year. She left with her parents for France, and I haven't herd from her since."
